To understand garage door springs, you first need to know how they work. Most garages use either torsion or extension springs.

Torsion springs are mounted on a metal shaft above the door. As the door closes, cables twist the springs, creating tension. When the door opens, this stored energy helps lift it.

Extension springs run alongside the door’s horizontal tracks. As the door closes, these springs stretch. When the door opens, the springs contract, pulling the door up.

Both systems counterbalance the door’s weight, making it light enough to open manually and reducing strain on the opener. Without working springs, the door won’t open.

Wear and Tear

Springs operate under extreme tension and have a limited lifespan. Most are rated for about 10,000 cycles (one open and close), which translates to five to ten years of use.

You can often spot a failing spring before it breaks. Look and listen for these common warning signs:

• Excessive Noise: Squeaking, groaning, or grinding could mean the springs are strained or need lubrication.
• Slow Operation: If the door opens much slower than usual, the springs may be losing tension.
